An iconic model created in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona was designed to meet the timing needs of professional endurance racing drivers. Fitted with a tachymetric graduated bezel and a high-performance mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex, this chronograph is legendary for its reliability: it is the instrument of choice for measuring elapsed time and determining average speeds.
A CHRONOGRAPH MADE FOR THE ROAD
The Cosmograph Daytona was designed to be the ultimate timing tool for endurance racing drivers thanks to its precision, its reliability and the outstanding legibility of its functions. Time intervals can be measured to within one-eighth of a second with the centre chronograph seconds hand, while the two counters on the dial at 9 and 3 o’clock display elapsed time in hours and minutes respectively. Drivers can therefore accurately map out their race times and determine how they must drive to win the race.
MEASURING SPEED UP TO 400 KM/H
The Cosmograph Daytona’s engraved bezel functions as a tachymeter: its scale can be used to read average speed over a given distance based on elapsed time. Positioned on the bezel to free space on the dial and offer optimal legibility, the tachymeter makes the Cosmograph Daytona the ideal instrument for measuring speeds up to 400 units per hour, expressed in kilometres, miles, or any other unit of measure.
THE COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA, SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER
Like all watches in the Oyster collection, each Cosmograph Daytona is certified as a Superlative Chronometer. This exclusive designation attests that it has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, which exceed watchmaking norms and standards. These tests are carried out on the fully assembled watch, in order to guarantee its superlative performance on the wrist.
The precision of every movement – officially certified as a chronometer by COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute) – is, therefore, tested a second time by Rolex after being cased, to ensure that it meets criteria for precision that are far more exacting than those for an official chronometer. The tolerance for the average rate of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer after casing is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day. Its precision is tested by Rolex using an exclusive methodology that simulates the conditions in which a watch is actually worn and is much more representative of real-life experience. The certification testing is carried out using state-of-the-art equipment specially developed by Rolex. The entirely automated series of tests also checks the waterproofness, the self-winding capacity and the power reserve of 100 per cent of Rolex watches. These tests systematically complement the qualification testing upstream during development and production that ensures the watches’ reliability, robustness, and resistance to magnetism and shocks.
The unique way in which Rolex watches are designed, manufactured and tested, together with the exclusive innovations from which they benefit, push back the limits of performance for mechanical watches and make Rolex the benchmark for watchmaking excellence. THE OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS
The Cosmograph Daytona’s Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet), is a paragon of robustness. The characteristically shaped middle case is crafted from a solid block of metal. The fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that grants only Rolex watchmakers access to the movement. The winding crown, fitted with the patented Triplock triple waterproofness system, as well as the chronograph pushers, screw down securely against the case. The crown guard is an integral part of the middle case. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire. The waterproof Oyster case provides the Cosmograph Daytona’s high-precision movement with optimal protection.
PERPETUAL CALIBRE 4130
The Cosmograph Daytona is equipped with calibre 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Its architecture, a composite of Rolex technology, was completely re-engineered: the number of components for the chronograph function was reduced significantly, thereby enhancing the movement’s reliability. The chronograph is engaged by a mechanism with a column wheel and vertical clutch. This enables an instantaneous and extremely precise start to the timing, and is extremely robust.
The oscillator, the true heart of the watch, has a blue Parachrom hairspring patented and manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive alloy. Insensitive to magnetic fields, the Parachrom hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring its regularity in any position. Firmly held in place by a height-adjustable traversing bridge, the oscillator has a large balance wheel with variable inertia regulated extremely precisely with gold Microstella nuts. Calibre 4130 is fitted with a self-winding module featuring a Perpetual rotor, which ensures continuous winding of the mainspring by harnessing the movements of the wrist to provide a constant source of energy. The Cosmograph Daytona’s movement will be seen only by certified Rolex watchmakers, yet it is beautifully finished and decorated in keeping with the brand’s uncompromising quality standards.
BRACELET AND CLASP, COMFORTABLE AND SECURE
The Cosmograph Daytona’s Oyster bracelet and leather strap are equipped with a patented Oysterlock safety clasp that prevents accidental opening. The bracelet is fitted with the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex. This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
